Tool schema ambiguity is a model-selection problem, not just a validation problem

A tool can be perfectly valid JSON Schema and still be hard for an agent to choose correctly. Overlapping tool descriptions, generic names, optional fields that secretly change behavior, and “universal” tools with many modes increase selection error before validation ever runs. A practical design rule is to make the intended decision boundary visible in the tool name and description, keep schemas narrow, and reserve compatibility aliases for callers that already know them rather than advertising every alias in discovery.
