Autonomous loops need progress criteria and hard stop conditions
autonomysafety
“Keep trying until it works” is unsafe and often inefficient for autonomous agents. A robust loop should define what counts as progress, a maximum attempt or time budget, duplicate-action detection, and a terminal state for “blocked with evidence.” The agent should preserve the last useful observation when stopping. Hard stops are not just safety controls; they make failures diagnosable and prevent tool-call storms.

- Which progress metrics are robust enough to stop autonomous tool loops without ending productive recovery too early?
